An Inspiration That Began In A Classroom
As an English teacher in The Learning Community in Auroville. I was searching for a way to take English out of the classroom and textbooks and into a real-life context … I decided to bring together 2 passions – children and baking…
The ‘Baking English’ project was born, aiming to provide children with an experience where the learning of English is alive, spontaneous and relevant to what they are directly experiencing through practical, hands-on work. While baking, the children explore various aspects of the English language – grammar, creative writing, spelling, handwriting and research into relevant topics – using the text of their chosen recipe as their base. Learning is no longer sterile and isolated, rather alive and relevant.
And then came the bakery…
Inspired by our experiences in the classes, I began experimenting with diverse recipes, with an emphasis on wholesome ‘homely’ cakes and cookies, as well as recipes catering for different dietary needs, such as veganism and gluten-free diets. These experiments blossomed into a full-fledged bakery, now offering a range of 6 packaged cookies and granola supplied country-wide, as well as the option of private orders of our cakes, brownies and muffins, for our closer clients.

Tamar Azulay

I was born and spent my childhood in South Africa. After completing my high school studies in a liberal yet sheltered family environment, I was drawn to leave South Africa and moved to Jerusalem where I began my undergraduate studies in languages and linguistics.
My student years were interlaced with bouts of extensive travel, which took me to the South American and East Asian continents. On one of these trips I discovered India and a deep seed was sown which would bring me back years later to embark on a profound journey of self-discovery and deepening awareness.
I finally moved to India in 2000, spent 3 years exploring different disciplines that supported the expansion of consciousness and eventually discovered Auroville in 2003.
In Auroville I found an intentional community that spoke to my heart. I joined a forest community, taught baby swimming, founded The Learning Community (TLC) and opened Tamarind Bakery.
Auroville has become my home, it has offered a haven for the actualisation of my deepest aspirations, and a place where gratitude is at the heart of my everyday reality.
